The cultural cliche from this part of the world is that people tend to flaunt signs of weath, and loudly claim privilege. And this is important for the social bond, and there is some history to it -- in the 19th c. the claim to be part of the enlightenment was the most important thing. Positing this kind of status involved a moral choice, and people recognized that. And centuries later, this turned into expensive cars (even if only rented for the weekend to visit the village) and flashy clothing. Culturally, it's cognate with the early modern commercial theatre in England in the 16th c., when it moved outside of the sponsorship and mansions of the aristocracy and to the town hall -- dressing up for the theatre made a certain kind of cultural claim.
So the glitzy cars on the street of Chicago and Milwaukee, etc. have some logic to them. But the thing is that they also tend to expect this from visitors. As a rather low-key fellow who tends to keep his cards well inside his vest, I'm enjoying the mountains and the natural scenery, but I limit my cultural contacts to a very occasional cup of coffee, and making the weekly grocery run. And the latter is to the German chains -- it's no exaggeration to say that just buying milk, eggs and bread in this part of the world can drag you into a criminal conspiracy, if you're not careful.
