One of Saul Bellow's characters called the undergraduates the noli me tangerines. Also: Fowles' Daniel Martin, when he goes to California and is befuddled by the easygoing ways of the flesh. Currency of the realm in Hollywood, apparently, much more so than in New York, and it's pretty bad there.
In short, there's a lot of it about.
In prosperity, it's easy enough for these things to go on, and life just course on in the normal manner, with the industrialized comforts. But when adversity comes, either individual or social, having lived like that will present some problems. And adversity does tend to come.
