I query the critical response to that Ninth. The furthest the mainstream papers appear to be willing to go is "patchy" (Telegraph). No. That wanted patching, yes, but it was a complete stumble.
Summer music criticism does tend to the feel-good vibe, but there does have to be some basic recognition of the event. I'm all for taking risks, and a Ninth at that pace is possible, but apparently not in that manner. If it doesn't come off, say so.
