Increasingly aware that all the corruption I've encountered has been in the context of general industrial prosperity in the West. So the malicious and false things go on, in the easy tenor of breezy conversation, and eveyone thinks that doing things in that manner must be right, because there's so much prosperity about.
If the world had more faith in ideas, this could be corrected, but part of the Faustian pact was choosing to believe that ideas are inherently illusory or meaningless, and the only things that mattered were what worked. (Though I've never seen an explanation as to how that last part could be tested without bringing ideas back into the picture by the back door.)
